Cheer for Chicago Aissawa at 2 great shows this weekend!
Saturday, January 19th at Las Manos Gallery in Andersonville
(1515 W. Foster, at Clark) 7:30-9pm, FREE
A show to share some of our newest tunes, in an intimate art gallery setting. We’re all about the art of drumming here at DrumFace, you know! Chicago Aissawa brings the sounds of folkloric North African percussion to Chicago. Our weekly practices at DrumFace are social-club style, and this is a long-awaited occasion to see us perform live and for free. Expect to see a few sets of our arrangements, Moroccan-style Aissawa music, and enjoy some nibbles from the Middle Eastern Bakery & Grocery. If you’re out for dinner, there are great restaurants right on the block. Try Icosium Cafe for North-African inspired crepes and mint tea, or Taste of Lebanon for cheap Middle Eastern eats. BeSaha! (to your health)
Sunday, January 20th at City Winery in the West Loop
(1200 W. Randolph) 7-11pm, $12
This show promises to blow your pointy slippers off! “Gypsy Surf” courtesy of LamaJamal, plus Black Bear Combo, MidEast Dancer Erika Ochoa, Moroccan grooves from Chicago Aissawa, DJ Warp and more. So much creativity in one room- and what a nice room it is! If you haven’t been to City Winery yet, here’s a great chance. Haggle for goods at the bazaar, get a henna tattoo, and be glad there are no camels. There will be drums by DrumFace and other exotic treasures of delight! As the poster says: “Absurd attire is optional” so you’re welcome to get in character and play along.
